Miss Minnesota Kathryn Knuttila visited Water Billboards on May, 10th. Her visit was made possible through Water Billboards donation to the Miss Minnesota Education Foundation. Water Billboards donated compostable water bottles and compostable products that were used during pageant week. While in Canby she spoke to both the elementary school and high school about her experiences as Miss Minnesota and also played originally composed piano selections. Kathryn’s mission as Miss Minnesota is to inspire Americans to make a positive difference in their neighborhoods, schools, and communities. You can learn more about Kathryn’s mission at http://www.whohasinspriedyou.com where you can also nominate someone who has inspired you! Green has to be the most popular word in the world right now. This word is used in may new ways like green-collar jobs, green design and unfortunately green washing. According to Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greenwashing green washing “is a term describing the deceptive use of green PR or green marketing in order to promote a misleading perception that a company’s policies or products are environmentally friendly.” I am sad to report that Water Billboards has experienced this phenomenon. For example a large hotel chain had us providing bids on compostable/biodegradable cups for their hotels. This process took many months and was not easy. In the end the company went with a paper cup lined with petroleum to replace the Styrofoam cups they were currently using. We were, to say the least, disappointed to lose this contract, but even more perplexed by the company telling us that they were going with that product because it looked more environmentally friendly than the Styrofoam they were using and was less expensive than our BPI certified (check out our post “Compostable? Biodegradeable: What’s the difference?) compostable cup. Tell us know about the green washing you have experienced.
These two environmental buzz words are often used interchangeably and can be confusing even to those of us who like to think we are “green.” Everyone seems to have their own definition and usage of these terms. We hope this short explanation will help alleviate some of this confusion.
According to the FTC’s (US Federal Trade Commission) Green Guide, a product is biodegradable if it “completely breaks down and returns to nature, decomposing into elements found in nature within a reasonably short period of time after customary disposal.” It is a myth, however, that biodegradable products are the solution to our landfill problem. Nothing bio degrades in a landfill because nothing is supposed to. The term biodegradable has no legal definition and there is no enforcement as to how this term is used, which only leads to further confusion.
According to Merriam-Webster compostable means to convert (as plant debris). This process, when done correctly, turns our waste into nutrient rich soil.
The BPI, Biodegradable Products Institute, is a not-for-profit association that promotes the importance of scientifically based standards for compostable material which biodegrade in large compost facilities. BPI has created a compostable logo that helps with this confusion. It lends credibility and recognition to the products that meet the ASTM D6400 and/or D6868 standards. The products carried by Water Billboards are all BPI certified.
Randy, one of the owners of Water Billboards, likes to say “Biodegradable is like grass, if you leave it on your lawn it will turn back to soil. Compostable means it needs the heat of a facility to activate the microbes to break down the waste. Everything that is biodegradable is also compostable, but not everything that is compostable is biodegradable.”
Water Billboards is a family owned and opperated private label water bottling company located in Canby Minnesota. We like to say that we add a bit of style and class to what is ordinarily just water. Your message or logo can be placed on a bottle to advertise your company, school, event or celebration. We also proudly offer that same quality in a PLA compostable ~ made from plants ~ bottle. Everyone likes to talk about our petroleum and landfill problems . . . we are doing soething about it! Not only is it good business, it is the right thing to do. The dream of all compostable items began at Disney World and the thought of why a restaurant or cafeteria couldn’t be all compostable waste instead of land-fill waste. Now that dream is a reality because we can make your event or location completely land-fill waste free. We can supply the plates to the spoons to the garbage bags at the end. Water Billboards has developed realtionships with many other companies so that we can now offer the complete line of compostable bio-degradabel service ware. We can be your one-stop shop for environmentally friendly products.
Although we will concentrate on educating our readers about the value of branding through private label water and the benefits of compostable products we are open to suggestions on blog topics. Let us know what you want to know about Water Billboards.
